In the future, Vuosaari harbour business park will smell of coffee
Paulig’s new roastery is now at roof height
Paulig’s roastery project, which is large in scale not only by Finnish standards but also globally, is moving ahead on schedule. The topping-out party for the building under construction in Vuosaari harbour business park will be held on Wednesday 18 June. The exterior of the building is already taking shape. The most striking part, the green coffee silos, will form a landmark 40 metres high above sea level.
Paulig’s new roastery, scheduled to go into production in 2009, is a major investment in Finland and the Helsinki region. It guarantees that Finns will continue to drink high-quality coffee, roasted in Finland, that matches their flavour preferences. In addition to Finland, coffee from the Vuosaari roastery will be exported to countries including Russia and the Baltic region, growing markets for Paulig.
“The decision on building a new roastery and its location in Finland was taken in summer 2006. Crucial factors in the decision were both our skilled personnel in Vuosaari and the excellent logistical location of the harbour. The new roastery will uphold the traditions of Finnish coffee-drinking with state-of-the-art methods,” says Managing Director Pekka Pirinen of Gustav Paulig Ltd.
A unique project
Minna Forsström of Gustav Paulig Ltd, who has led the project from the drawing-board stage, is happy with the progress on schedule of a construction project. “At the end of last year, we signed contracts for the largest process equipment procurements, including the roasting machinery, and the procurements for the packaging room are now on the home straight. The largest single section of the building, the green coffee silos, is currently reaching completion. All in all, roasteries are not built very often, and as far as I know, our job is today the largest in the world,” says Project Director Forsström.
The new roastery will turn out more than 100 million packets of coffee a year. The building will also provide offices for the personnel of Gustav Paulig Ltd, Paulig Pro Ltd, Paulig Ltd and Santa Maria Finland Ltd – more than 200 people. The personnel will move into the new facilities in autumn 2009, when the present roastery will be wound up. Paulig, along with the City of Helsinki and local associations, has scheduled planning permission for seaside residential estates in the area.
